QUADROON,
the child of a mulatto and a white person. (Span.,—L.)
Better quarteroon or quartroon. So called because of
black blood only in a fourth part. Modern; and imported from
America.—Span. cuarteron,
the child of a creole and Spaniard (Neuman); also, a fourth part.
Formed with suffixes -er- and -on from cuarto, a fourth
part.—Lat. quartum,
acc. of quartus, fourth. See Quart,
Quartern.
