Etymology Dictionary

Origin and Etymology of the word QUASH.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

QUASH,  to crush, annihilate, annul.  (F.,—L.)   M.E. quaschen; see 'Quaschyn, quasso' in Prompt. Parv.   Properly transitive; but used intransitively in P. Plowman, C. xxi. 64.   And see Owl and Nightingale, 1388.—O.F. quasser, later casser, to breake,... quash asunder;' Cot.   (He gives both spellings.)—Lat. quassare, to shatter; frequentative of quatere (supine quassum), to shake.   Root uncertain.   The O.F. quasser also means 'to abrogate, annul' (Cot.), as in E. 'to quash an indictment.'   The slight likeness to A.S. cwísan, to break, is accidental; see Queasy.   Der. (from Lat. quatere) casque, cask, con-cuss-ion, dis-cuss, per-cuss-ion. [†]
