Etymology Dictionary

Origin and Etymology of the word RAFTER.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

RAFTER,  a beam to support a roof.  (E.)   M. E. rafter, Chaucer, C. T. 992.—A. S. ræfter, Ælfred, tr. of Beda, b. iii. c. 16.   An extension (with Aryan suffix -RA) from the base RAFT appearing in Dan. raft, Icel. raptr (raftr), a rafter, beam.   Again, Dan. raft is an extension (with suffix -ta) from the base RAF appearing in Icel. ráf, ræfr, a roof, which is cognate with O. H. G. ráfo, M. H. G. rávo, a spar, a rafter.   The orig. sense is 'that which covers.'—RAP, to cover; whence Gk. ὄροφος, a roof; see Fick, i. 741, iii. 251.   Der. rafter, verb.   And see raft.   It does not seem to be allied to roof, which has an initial h; A. S. hróf.
