RANCID,
sour, having a rank smell. (L.) A late word; in Bailey, vol. i.
ed. 1735.—Lat. rancidus,
rancid.—Lat. rancere,
to stink; only used in the pres. part. rancens, stinking. ¶
This word has influenced the sense of the E. adj. rank; see Rank
(2). Der. rancid-ly, -ness; also ranc-our, q.v.
