Etymology Dictionary

Origin and Etymology of the word SAG.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

SAG,  to droop, be depressed.  (Scand.)   M. E. saggen, Prompt. Parv. p. 440.—Swed. sacka, to settle, sink down; Dan. sakke (as a nautical term), to have stern-way. + G. sacken, to sink.   β. The O. Swed. sacka is used of the settling of dregs; so also Low G. sakken, in the Bremen Wörterbuch.   It seems to be an unnasalised form of sink, with the same sense; see Sink.   The Icel. sokkning, a sinking, is from sökkva (= sankva), to sink.   We cannot well connect it with A. S. sígan, to sink; though there may have been some confusion with it.
