TACIT,
silent. (L.) In Milton, Samson, 430. No doubt
directly from Lat., though Cot. gives F. tacite, 'silent.'Lat.
tacitus, silent.Lat. tacere,
to be silent. Cognate with Goth. thahan, to be silent, Icel.
þegja, Swed. tiga, to be silent. All from a base TAK, with the sense
'to be silent.' Der. tacit-urn, from F. taciturne, 'silent,' Cot.;
tacit-urn-i-ty, Troilus, iv. 2. 75, from F. taciturnité, 'taciturnity,' Cot.;
from Lat. acc. taciturnitatem.
