TAWNY,
a yellowish brown. (F.,—C.) Merely another spelling of tanny,
i.e. resembling that which is tanned by the sun, sun-burnt. By
heraldic writers it is spelt tenny or tenné. 'Tawny...
in blazon, is known by the name of tenne;' Guillim, Display of Heraldry,
sect. i. cap. 3. M.E. tanny. 'Tanny
colowre, or tawny;' Prompt. Parv.—F. tanné, 'tawny;'
Cot. It is the pp. of F. tanner, taner, to tan.—F. tan, tan;
see Tan. Der. tawni-ness.
