UNKEMPT,
not combed. (E.) In Spenser, F. Q. iii. 10. 29; and Shep. Kal.
November, 50; in both places in the metaphorical sense of rough or
rude. A contr. form of unkembed. From un-,
not; and M.E. kembed, kempt, combed, Chaucer, C. T. 2145 (or
2143). Kembed is the pp. of kemben, to comb, P.
Plowman, B. x. 18.—A.S. cemban, to comb; Ælfric's Grammar, ed.
Zupitza, p. 108, l. 6; formed (by vowel-change of a to e) from A.S.
