Origin and Etymology of the word VACATION.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

VACATION,  leisure, cessation from labour.  (F.,—L.)   In Palsgrave, spelt vacacion; and prob. in use much earlier.—F. vacation, 'a vacation, vacancy, leisure;' Cot.—Lat. uacationem, acc. of uacatio, leisure.—Lat. uacatus, pp. of uacare, to be empty, to be free from, to be unoccupied.   Root unknown.   Der. vacant, in early use, in Rob. of Brunne, tr. of Langtoft, p. 110, l. 15, from F. vacant, 'vacant,' Cot., from the stem of the pres. part. of Lat. uacare; hence vacanc-y, Hamlet, iii. 4. 117; vacate, vb., a late word, from uacatus, pp. of uacare.   And see vac-uum.
