VALVE, one
of the leaves of a folding-door, a lid which opens only one way, one of the
pieces of a (bivalve) shell. (F.,—L.) 'Valves,
folding-doors or windows;' Blount's Gloss., ed. 1674.—F. valve, 'a
foulding, or two-leaved door, or window;' Cot.—Lat. ualua, sing. of ualuæ,
the leaves of a folding-door. Allied to Lat. uoluere, to roll, turn
round about; from the revolving of the leaves on their hinges. See Voluble. Der.
valv-ed.
