VANQUISH,  to conquer, defeat.  (F.,—L.)   M.E. venkisen, P. Plowman, C. xxi. 106; venkusen, Wyclif, 1 Kings, xiv. 47, earlier version; venquishen, Chaucer, C. T. 4711 (Group B. 291).—O.F. veinquir (whence the stem veinquis-), occurring in the 14th century as a collateral form of O.F. veincre (mod. F. vaincre); cf. F. vainquis, still used as the pt. t. of vaincre, and the form que je vainquisse.—Lat. uincere, to conquer; pt. t. uici, pp. uicturs (stem uic-).—WIK, to fight, strive; whence also Goth. weihan, weigan (pp. wig-ans), O.H.G. and A.S. wígan, to strive, fight, contend; Fick, iii. 783.   Der. vanquish-er; and see victor.
