Etymology Dictionary

Origin of the word VANTAGE.  Etymology of the word VANTAGE.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893.

VANTAGE,  advantage.  (F.,—L.)   Common in Shak.; in K. John, ii. 550, &c.; spelt vauntage in Palsgrave; who also gives:  'I vauntage one, I profyte him, je vantaige; What dothe it vauntage you, quest ce quil vous vantage, or aduantage.'—F. avantage, 'an advantage;; avantager, to advantage;' Cot.   See Advantage.   Thus vantage is a headless form of F. avantage; and it is clear from Palsgrave (as above) that the loss of initial a occurred in F. as well as in E. [†]

ADDENDA

Anglo-F.  vantage, advantage, Year-Books of Edw. I ii. 209.
