VENAL,  that can be bought, mercenary.  (F.,—L.)   In Pope, Epistle to Jervas, l. 2.—F. venal, 'vendible, saleable;' Cot.—Lat. uenalis, saleable, for sale.—Lat. uēn-us, or uēn-um, sale.   Put for ues-nus*, ues-num*, whence the long e; allied to Gk. ὠνός, price, and Skt. vasna, price, wages, wealth, vasu, wealth.   The orig. sense seems to be 'means of existence;' from WAS, to dwell, exist; Fick, i. 780, and Benfey.   Der. venal-i-ty, from F. venalité, 'venality,' Cot.; from Lat. acc. uenalitatem.
