XEBEC,
a small three-masted vessel used in the Mediterranean. (Span.Turk.)
In Ash's Dict. ed. 1775.Span.
xabeque, a xebec. So also Port. zabeco, F. chebec.Turk.
sumbakí, 'a kind of Asiatic ship;' Rich. Dict. p. 852. He also
gives Pers. sumbuk, a small ship; Arab. sumbúk, a small boat, a
pinnace; on the same page. See Devic, Supp. to Littré, s.v.
chebec, which is the F. form; he gives also Port. xabeco, Ital.
zambecco, the latter form retaining the nasal m, which is lost in
the other languages. He adds that the word
sumbakí is given in
the first ed. of Meninski's Thesaurus (1680); and that the mod.
Arab. word is shabák; see Dozy, Glossaire, p. 352.
