Hind. zamíndár, vernacularly jamíndár, corruptly
zemindár, an

zamín, earth, land, soil; dár, holding, possessing, Rich. Dict. pp.
782, 646. Here Pers. zamín is allied to Lat.
humus,
ground; and Pers. dár to Skt. dhri, to hold; see
