A'BECKET.   A local name meaning "at the Beckhead," from residence at the head or source of the beck; cf. Birkett, originally Birkhead, or Birkenhead, the head of the birch-trees.  Birkett is a Cumberland surname.  Birkenhead, co. Chester, is but a variant, being the adjectival form; v. Beck.  Cf. Roger a'Hulle (co. Oxf., 1273. A.), i.e. Roger at the Hill.
