ABBITT, ABBOT, ABBOTT,
ABBOTSON, ABBETT.
Bardsley has: (1) A baptismal name meaning "the son of
Abraham,"
from the nickname Abb, and diminutive Abb-ot. It is all but
certain that the majority of our Abbotts, although bearing a conventual
title, are thus descended. Abraham was a favourite name in the 13th
century. Abel
was also popular, and may have shared the parentage. (2) An official, or
nickname, meaning "the Abbot." Gates
has: diminutive of Abb, or of Abraham, Gothic, Ab, han, or Fr. Aubert, p.
