Origin and Etymology of the Surname ABEGG.

From Universal Pronouncing Dictionary of Biography and Mythology, by Joseph Thomas, 1915, and, Surname Book and Racial History, by Susa Young Gates, 1918.

 

ABEGG.  Thomas has:  German name composed of the elements ab "off" and egg/eck(e) "corner, promontory," hence "lives near the corner of a mountain." This was the name of a German jurist, born at Erlangen in 1796.  He became professor of law at Breslau in 1826, and published many legal works.  He died at Berlin, May 29, 1868.

Gates has:  Celtic, Begg, little; Bigg, Teutonic, tall, big.
