AFFLECK, AFFLICK,
Bardsley has: a local name meaning "of Auchinleck,"
N. B. 'A singular contraction of the surname Auchinleck, borne by an
ancient family "of that ilk" in Ayrshire. Sir Edmund Affleck,
created baronet in 1782, was sixth in descent from Sir John Auchinleck, son of
Gilbert A. of Auchinleck': Lower, Pat. Brit., p. 3. W. Arthur
has: (Gaelic and Celtic) Local. Said to be a corruption of the
name Auchinleck, which was assumed by the proprietors of the lands and
barony of Auchinleck, near Dundee, in Angusshire, Scotland. The name
is pronounced Affleck by the natives. (See Auchinleck).
