ALBERT, ALLBRIGHT,
ALLBRED, ALBRIGHT. Bardsley
has: a baptismal name meaning "the son of Albert," from
Ethelbert or Adelbert; German Albrecht; v. also Allbright. The
Albrechts of the London Dir. are all of late German immigration. Also the
Albrechts of Philadelphia. Arthur
has: ALBERT.
(German) All bright or famous; beort or bert, signifies
famous, fair, and clear, bright; so Sebert and Ethelbert were
sometimes written Se bright and Ethel bright. All, Eal,
and Æl, in old English and Saxon compound names, have the same signification as
the English All, as Al-dred, Al-win, etc. And for ALBRECHT.
(Saxon) The same as Albert—All-bright.
Yonge gives the
name the meaning "nobly bright."
