Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname ALDHOUSE, ALDHOUS, ALDIS, ALDOUS, ALDUS, ALLDISS.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901, and,
An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names, by William Arthur, M. A., 1857.

ALDHOUSE, ALDHOUS, ALDIS, ALDOUS, ALDUS, ALLDISS.   Bardsley has:  A baptismal name meaning "the son of Aldus"; not local, as several of its corrupted forms would seem to prove.  These are simply imitative.  The documentary proofs are extremely strong.  Norfolk has been a long-established home for this name, both in its fontal and patronymic character.

Arthur has:  ALDIS.  (Saxon)   A contraction of ald-house, the old house.
