ALGAR, ALGER, ELGAR.
Bardsley has: A baptismal name meaning "the son of Algar," or "Alfgar."
In Domesday commonly found as Algar. It is also met with
alone without surname attached in the Hundred Rolls, ii. 472. Algar
is early found in co. Norfolk both as a personal and a surname.
Although forgotten now, the name was evidently popular in its day and
generation; cf. the place-name Algersthorp, co. Norf.
Arthur has: ALGAR.
(Gaelic) Noble. Yonge
gives the meaning "hall spear."
