ALLCORN, ALCHIN,
ALLCHIN, ALCHORN, ALCORN.
(1) A baptismal name meaning "the son of Alcuin" (v. Yonge, ii. 350),
corrupted to Oldcorn in north England. No doubt both (2) and (1) have
assimilated. In a general way Alchorn represents the local, and Alcorn the
personal surname. (2) A local name meaning "of Alchorne,"
a manor in the parish of Rotherfield, co. Sussex, where the family lived in the
14th century. Some of their descendants, still resident in that parish,
have, within a generation or two, corrupted their name to Allcorn (Lower).
