ALLKINS, ALLCHIN,
ALCHIN, ALLKIN, ALKINS.
A baptismal name meaning "the son of Allen," from the diminutive
Allikin or Allkin; cf. Per-kin, Wat-kin, &c. Mr. Lower suggests
that it stands for Halkin, the diminutive of Henry. This view is
defeated by the fact that Akin has always been without the aspirate, and has
always run side by side with its close relation Alock, q.v. Let it
not be forgotten that Allen, as one of the favourite personal names of the 13th
and 14th centuries, must have had its popular nickname and pet forms. I
have included Allchin and Alchin as variants of Allkin. But v.
Allcorn.
