ALLPRESS.
A nickname? meaning "the holy priest" (?); A.S. halig, holy,
from hal, whole. Whatever the meaning, the following entry
refers to the ancestor:
Thomas Alprest, co.
Camb., 1273. A.
Thus -prest
(priest) and not -press is the suffix. The surname has always
had cos. Cambridge and Hants for its habitat. There need be no
anxiety as to the want of an h if Holy-priest be the parent.
The Hundred Rolls (1273) in scores of cases ignore the aspirate. The
Cockney is not in it, judging by early registers.
