ALLSOP, ALLSOPP, ALLSUP,
ALSOP. Bardsley
has: A local name meaning "of Alsop-en-le-dale," a chapelry in
the parish of Ashbourne, co. Derby. The corruption "Allsup"
is suggestive of universal pale ale! The reason why Alsop and
its variants are common in the United States is because several of the name were
among the earliest settlers there. Arthur
has: From Alsop, Co. Derby, England. One might imagine it a corruption
of Ale-shop, a name given to one who kept an ale-shop. A very
appropriate name at the present day; for "Alsop's ale" is
celebrated all the world over.
