Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname ALLVEY, ALVEY, ALWAY, ELVEY.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

ALLVEY, ALVEY, ALWAY, ELVEY.   A baptismal name meaning "the son of Aldwy," a fontal or personal name long ago forgotten in England, but it lives today in several patronymics.  Of some land in Somerton, co. Norfolk, it is said "the Conqueror had granted this to Alwy de Tetford" (FF. xi. 197).
