From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

 

AMBLER.   An occupational name meaning "the ambler," one who looked after the amblers in his lord's stables; one who taught horses to amble.  Lower says "le Ambleur, Fr., an officer of the king's stable."   Almost akin to Palfreyman, q.v.   This surname has ramified strongly in Yorkshire.
