ANCELL, ANCILL, ANSELL,
ANSEL. (1)
A baptismal name meaning "the son of Ancel," whence diminutives
Ancelot and Ancelin; v. Lancelot
and Lancelin.
(2) A baptismal name meaning "the son of Anselm"
(?). I merely suggest this as a possibility. No doubt the final m
in Anselm might be easily dropped. But of course (1) is the true and
natural solution in the majority of cases.
