ANDERTON.
(1) A local name meaning "of Anderton," a township in the parish of
Standish, co. Lanc. There seems to be a second Anderton.
Samuel Oldknow, of Mellor, was "born at Anderton, near Bolton, in
Lancashire, Oct. 5, 1736,... and established a large muslin manufactory at
Stockport in 1784': v. East Cheshire, ii. 54. Probably,
however, the same place is meant. (2) A local name meaning "of
Anderton," a township in the parish of Great Budworth, co. Chester.
Cf. Andarton.
