ANGEL, ANGELL.
(1) A baptismal name meaning "the son of Angel"; in later days Angela
and Angelina. For the full history of this once-popular name, v.
Yonge, i. 126-7. The Puritans could not oust this name, though
bitterly hated by them. (2) A local name meaning "at the
Angle"; v. Angle.
Most probably the source of the majority of our Angels and Angells.
The font-name was unknown in England, so far as I can discover, in the 13th and
14th centuries.
