ANKERMAN.   An occupational name meaning "the ankerman," i.e. the servant of the anker or hermit, now generally styled an anchorite; but ancre was the earlier form.   Cf. Matthewman, Monkman, Priestman, Vickerman, Armetman (v. Armet), &c., all Yorkshire surnames.

Cotgrave has ankrosse, a female hermit.
