ANNIS, ANNISON,
ANNINGSON, ANNESS, ANINGSON, ANNIN, ANNING.
(1) A baptismal name meaning "the son of Ann," from the diminutive
Annie. "Pay me,
quod he, or by the swete Seinte Anne."—Chaucer, C. T. 7193. (2)
A baptismal name meaning "the son of Agnes," popularly Annis,
Annes, or Annas. The variant Anningson is curious, and seems
founded upon some early diminutive Annin, with an excrescent g, as
in Jennings; cf. Pattison and Pattinson. In general (2) must be
looked upon as the parent of all these names. Annis was the popular
form of Agnes from the 14th century downwards.
