ANNOTT, ANNOTSON,
ANNETT, ANNETTE. A
baptismal name meaning "the son
of Anne," diminutive Ann-ot;
v. Anson. "Annet,
the common gull, so called in Northumberland": Halliwell.
No doubt taken from the once popular diminutive of Anne, especially popular on
the north-east coast of England. Annot Alyface is a character in
Ralph Roister Doister, by Nicholas Udall, written about 1550. She
sings:
"Work,
Tibet: work, Annot: work, Margery:
Sew, Tibet: knit Annot: spin, Margery:
Let us see who will win the victory."
Dodsley's Old English Plays, iii. 72.
