Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname ANSKETTLE, ASKETTLE, ASKELL, ASKILL, AISKELL, ASKEL.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

ANSKETTLE, ASKETTLE, ASKELL, ASKILL, AISKELL, ASKEL.   A baptismal name meaning "the son of Anskettle," or "Askettle," or "Askell" (kettle as a suffix always became kell, kill, or kle).   Anskettle (a variant of Oskettle, q.v.) was probably a Norman introduction.   For other instances, v. Astell.
