ANTILL.
A local name meaning "of Ampthill." I owe the suggestion
to Lower, and doubt not it is correct. The corruption was
inevitable. Cf. Amphield, or Anfield, a hamlet in the parish of Hursley.
Ampthill is a market town seven miles from Bedford. The surname in its
corrupted form is better represented in the United States than in
England.
