Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname ANTLIFF, ANTCLIFF, ANTCLIFFE.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

ANTLIFF, ANTCLIFF, ANTCLIFFE.   A local name meaning "of Arncliff," a village and parish, W. Rid. of Yorkshire, sixteen miles north of Shipton.  In local names, whose suffix is -cliff, there is a tendency to elide the c; cf. Cunliffe or Topliff for Cuncliff and Topcliff.  This surname has crossed the Atlantic.  No doubt the meaning is the eagle-cliff.
