APLIN, APPLIN.
(1) A baptismal name meaning
"the son of Appoline." The homily "Against the perils of
Idolatry" says, "All diseases have their special saints as gods, the
curers of them: the toothache, St. Appoline." This was the
usual English form of Appolonia, a martyr at Alexandria, who, among other
tortures, had all her teeth beaten out. It was a popular girl's name and
survived the Reformation. (2) A baptismal name meaning "the son
of Abel," from diminutive Abelin, sharpened to Apelin; cf. Apps
for Abbs, or Epps
for Ebbs.
(3) A baptismal name meaning "the son of Lyon," a Welsh personal name,
whence the patronymic ap-Lyon. This undoubtedly became Applin,
and represents the Applins of cos. Somerset, Hereford, and south-west
England generally; cf. Applejohn.
