Origin and Etymology of the Surname APPLETON.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

APPLETON.   A local name meaning "of Appleton."   Parishes in diocs. of Norwich, Oxford, York (3), and Ripon.   The meaning is obvious:  appel or appil, apple, and ton, a town, an enclosure; cf. Appleyard and Applegarth.  Many places would naturally acquire such a title.  There are townships so called in cos. Lancaster and Chester.
