APPLEYARD.   A local name meaning "at the Appleyard," from apple, and yard, or garth, an enclosure, an orchard.  "Appullyerde, or gardeyne, or orcherde:  Pomerium":  Prompt. Parv.   Evidently a familiar word all over the kingdom for an orchard; cf. Applegarth.
