Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname ARCHDEACON, ARCEDECKNE.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

ARCHDEACON, ARCEDECKNE.   An official name meaning "the archdeacon."  The name still survives, and not long ago I saw it over a hatter's shop.  "Daniel Archdeacon was recommended to the king for his services, 1610": State Papers, 1623-5, p. 545.   Quite recently some members of the Archdeacon family have adopted the mediaeval Arcedekne, "not wisely, but too well."
