ARCHDEACON, ARCEDECKNE.
An official name meaning "the
archdeacon." The name still survives, and not long ago I saw it over
a hatter's shop. "Daniel Archdeacon was recommended to the king for
his services, 1610": State Papers, 1623-5, p. 545. Quite
recently some members of the Archdeacon family have adopted the mediaeval
Arcedekne, "not wisely, but too well."
