Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname ARNALD, ARNALL, ARNELL.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

ARNALD, ARNALL, ARNELL.   (1) A baptismal name meaning "the son of Arnold," q.v.   The omission of the final d in Arnald was perfectly natural, just as natural as to have added it if it were not there; cf. provincial gownd for gown, or Simmonds for Simmons.   (2) A local name meaning "of Arnold," a village in the parish of Long Riston, co. York; also "of Arnold," a parish in co. Notts.
