ASHCROFT, ASCROFT,
ASHCRAFT. A
local name meaning "of Ashcroft." Seemingly a Norfolk
surname. The suffix -croft is often found as -craft;
cf. Meadowcroft
and Meadowcraft, and v. Croft
and Craft, or
Crofter and Crafter.
Of course the origin is simple enough, i.e. the croft or enclosure where the
ash-trees grew. It is quite clear also that a Lancashire family are sprung
from a place named Ashcroft in that county.
