ASKEW, ASCOUGH,
AINSCOUGH, AINSCOW.
Bardsley has: A local name meaning "of Aiskew," a township in
the parish of Bedale, co. York; v. Askey.
The original form was Aiskew or Ayscough. This by an intrusive n
became, in Lancashire, Ainscough and Ainscow. But Askew
is the generally adopted form. It was natural that the surname should
cross the border from Yorkshire to Lancashire. Arthur
has: ASKEW (Saxon)
Acksheugh,
hilly lands covered with oaks. Aschau, local, a town on the bend of a
river in Sleswick, Denmark. Askew, crooked, from the Danish.
