Origin and Etymology of the Surname ASSER,
ASHER.

From A Dictionary
of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley,
1901.

|
ASSER, ASHER.
A baptismal name meaning "the son of Asser." "Asser
(says Mr. Lower), an ancient personal name, as Asserius Menevensis, the
preceptor of King Alfred. Two tenants called Azor are found in Domesday":
Patr. Brit. p. 13. The frequent occurrence of Asher in the United States
directories is due to an influx of German Aschers, who perhaps represent
the same personal name.
