AVERY, AVORY, AUVREY,
AVERSON. Bardsley
has: A baptismal name meaning "the son of Avery"; v. Every.
Avery is strongly represented in the United States, especially in
Boston. This is easily accounted for. Jacob Averie (aged 33) and
George Averie (aged 23) sailed for Virginia in 1635. Others of the same
name followed. (v. Hotten's Lists of Emigrants, p. 121, and v. Index.)
Arthur has: AVERY
(Gaelic) From Aimhrea (the "mh" having the sound
of "v"), denoting contention or disagreement. It may be from Avery,
a granary, or from Aviarius, Latin, a bird-keeper.
