AVES, AVIS, AVISON.   Bardsley has:  A baptismal name meaning "the son of Avis," originally Hawisia or Hawoyse.  This very soon settled into Avicia, Avice, or Avis.  It was decidedly popular for several centuries.  (For history of the name, v. Yonge, ii. 212.)

Arthur has:  AVIS.   Avis, in French, is a projector, schemer, busy-body.  Avus, Latin, a grandfather, ancestor.  Avis, a bird.
