A baptismal name meaning "the
son of Etheldreda," popularly Awdry. St. Awdry's Fair is held
on Oct. 17, at the Isle of Ely. Its St. Awdry necklaces, showy but cheap,
gave rise to the term "tawdry-lace," whence adj. tawdry;
v. Skeat.
