Origin and Etymology of the Surname AWDREY, AWDRY, AUDREY.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

AWDREY, AWDRY, AUDREY.   A baptismal name meaning "the son of Etheldreda," popularly Awdry.  St. Awdry's Fair is held on Oct. 17, at the Isle of Ely.  Its St. Awdry necklaces, showy but cheap, gave rise to the term "tawdry-lace," whence adj. tawdry; v. Skeat.
