Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname BACKHOUSE, BACCHUS, BACKUS.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

BACKHOUSE, BACCHUS, BACKUS.   A local name meaning "at the bake-house," from residence therein.   "Bake-howse, or bakynge house:  pistrina:" Prompt. Parv.  Halliwell mistakenly makes it a back-house, or wash-house (v. Backas, i. 130).   With Bacchus (imitative), cf. Kirkus (Church-house), Malthus (Malt-house), or Loftus (Loft-house).
