BACKSTER, BAGSTER,
BAXTER.
An occupational name meaning "the bakester," a baker of bread, with
the feminine suffix; originally a woman's occupation. Langland speak of
"Baksteres and
brewesteres,
And bochiers manye."
"Baxter, bakstare,
baker": Prompt. Parv. p. 21.
Backster is one of
the names in Foxe's list of Marian martyrs. The ordinances of the Guild of
the Purification (Bishop's Lynn, 1367), are signed by "Johannes Austyn, baxter"
(English Guilds, p. 90). Capgrave says, "In this same tyme (B.C. 205)
lyved the eloquent man which hite (was called) Plautus, and for al his eloquens
he was compelled for to dwell with a baxter, and grind his corne at a querne."
